If you're a single sculler who wants to know exactly what to change to increase performance, train more efficiently and have your single and blades set up perfectly for you, then this service may interest you....
The problem a lot of single scullers face is having all the drive in the world, freedom to train around their lifestyle and desire to make the boat go faster, but a lack of decent, consistent coaching and feedback. We're all looking for that feeling when everything clicks and you're moving perfectly with the boat, gliding along the water for what feels like minimal effort. Wouldn't it be great to unlock that feeling more consistently?
Firsty - what is it?
The ClearStroke service uses the latest Peach Innovations telemetry system to collect essential rowing data like stroke length, boat acceleration, power output, catch slip + finish wash, force application and above all, consistency (boats move fastest from A to B when you can deliver your highest possible power comfortably and consistently).
What sets this service apart is how the data is interpreted and used in coached sessions to quantify and therefore target tangible improvements. You've no doubt had coaches talking about the catch, your drive sequencing and boat acceleration - but what does this really look and feel like? We cannot know until we measure it!
Yes, there are already some excellent services out there that collect data and produce a report with feedback. The difference here is that I'm going to use that data and work with you to help you get to the next step.
Using telemetry in my own coaching forced me to change my own beliefs about what made a boat go fast, because I simply could not argue with what the data was showing. Since 2017 I have used telemetry to help deliver 5 gold medals and four British records at Under 23 World Championships, win and set a Henley Royal Regatta course record in the Prince of Wales (men's quad), win multiple GB sculling trials and most recently coaching George Bourne, the GB single sculler to A finals at World Cups, European Championships and the Olympic Qualification Regatta.
How does the service work?
This is a one to one service, run either at your club or at Dorney Lake, Berkshire. It will be most effective using your own single scull on a body of water that is quiet - rowing in wash or lots of steering strokes will give inconsistent results.
We will run over half a day, on the following schedule:
Arrive, measure your current rigging / blade lengths and set up the telemetry system on your boat. I have all necessary equipment, all I require is two trestles and a flat surface. This can take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the age and model of your boat, which I will need to know in advance.
Session 1: data collection using either my own protocol, or yours if you are looking to discover something more specific. We can agree on this through the initial consultation process. We will find out how your stroke profile looks at different rates and intensities, therefore guiding us on what to improve and when. E.g. you may paddle very well, but can you transfer the same good movement and connection up through the rates to race pace?
Post session 1 feedback looking at data alongside 4k hyper-smooth video
Between sessions we may undertake one or all of: rigging changes, mobility assessments and protocols, erg technique assessment.
Session 2: coached session using the data and video feedback from session 1. Further data collection to quantify any desired changes. My goal here is to add the most possible value to your existing movement, not to reinvent the wheel. I understand there is more than one way to make a boat go fast!
Post session 2 feedback looking at data alongside video.
On completion; you will receive a summary document detailing reports from both sessions and suggested focuses going forwards. This may include specific drills, mobility, strength exercises and training styles / sessions. You will also receive all of your videos in an online folder.
A follow up session is recommended after a 3-5 week block of consistent sculling - this will be another coached session, both to check in and to quantify improvement and provide further recommendations for continued sculling development.
