Oxford Amateur Rowing Club
Coaches for Men’s, Women’s and Development Squads
Our club
Oxford Amateur Rowing Club (OARC, or Accies for short) is a friendly, supportive and flexible rowing club with an adult-only membership across three squads: men, women and development We are one of the three “town” clubs in Oxford.
The club has over 100 members and we are looking for enthusiastic and committed coaches to help us progress. Our members have family, work, study, or other commitments which prevent rowing being their focus however we aim to row to the best level we can despite the limitations thrust upon us by adult life!
The role
We are looking for additional coaches to cover the following:
Men’s & Women’s squad outings
Weekend morning outings at 8am on Saturday. Also some later (10am) Saturday and Sunday outings.
Midweek morning outings through the year. Start times vary from 6.30 to 7am depending on daylight.
Midweek evening outings in summer, starting at 6-6.30pm.
Development squad outings at 10.30am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday, and at the midweek times above
Ideally, we would be looking for coaches able to regularly commit to a range of outings to play a part in developing crews and individuals over time. However we would also be interested in hearing from anyone interested in coaching sessions on an ad-hoc basis
You must be happy to coach a broad spectrum of abilities and to work with the captains to maintain engagement of members with varying competitive aims, commitment levels, and technical and physical ability
To work with our squad captains to develop overarching training plans for season
To provide individual and crew feedback to squad captains and input on crew selection
To develop high-level outing plans for uncoached outings
To advise on rigging
The Squads
Our Development Squad is a mixed squad including graduates of our Summer Learn to Row courses as well as joiners from outside who need to build experience before joining the Men’s and Women’s squad. The focus is technical improvement and enjoyment, with racing encouraged, particularly at Isis Winter League events and suitable summer Heads races.
Our Men’s and Women’s Squads vary from graduates of the Development Squad to members with decades of rowing experience, and from occasional rowers to others training most days with a view to competing. Although not all race, the focus is on preparing the skills to do so. The squads race at a number of Heads through the winter including WeHoRR and HoRR, and at regattas of varying levels through the summer.
