Churchill College Boat Club (CCBC) is seeking a paid head coach for the 26/27 season to join and enhance our volunteer coaching team.
The structure of the role is flexible dependent on the applicant’s other commitments.
However, essential parts of the role include:
Coaching across the breadth of the current squad (from novices to first boats)
in a collaborative manner alongside an established group of existing volunteer
coaches.
A commitment to coach approximately 3-4 weekday morning sessions and 1-2 weekend sessions.
Development of training plans suitable for each squad.
The role could also include other desirable elements, depending on the experience and qualifications of the applicant, such as:
Strength and conditioning training.
Towing to off-Cam races.
Person specification:
Prior experience in rowing and coaching is necessary, but formal qualifications are not required. References will be requested however.
Additional useful qualifications include:
Full Driving license.
RYA powerboat handling level 2 licence.
First Aid.
Safeguarding training (applicants may need a Disclosure and Barring Service
(DBS) check).
Successful candidates will benefit from the opportunity to develop their coaching
skills further via additional training and recognised qualifications. The post is initially for one year (planned start October 2026, three 10 week terms,
plus the possibility for additional out-of-term sessions), with a realistic prospect of
extending beyond this, and a future scope that can be tailored to the successful
candidate's ambitions.
About the Club
Churchill College Boat Club is a heavily ‘homegrown’ boat club, with 90% of members learning to row at the college. The women’s first boat sits 5th in the May bumps with the men’s first boat 16th, the lower boats have a strong recent history of performing well, with the women’s second boat not having been bumped in Lent and May bumps since 2017. The novice boats are routinely in the top ten across all colleges with 3 podium finishes since the Covid pandemic. Also since this time, four men (who all began rowing at Churchill) and seven women (five learnt to row at Churchill) have trialled with the Cambridge University squad, most notably a 2021 novice making Blondie ('23) and the women's Blue Boat ('24), a 2023 men's novice in the lightweight blue boat ('25, '26) and a 2022 Novice racing in Goldie ('24). There have also been four Churchill women novices who went on to race in the Spares races in the last three years.
